Universal Credit Christmas Bonus: Dates, Bonuses and What to Expect

As Christmas approaches, millions of people across the UK who rely on Department for Work and Pensions benefits may notice changes to their usual payment dates. With bank holidays falling across the festive period, some payments are expected to arrive earlier than normal to avoid delays.

Although the DWP has not yet published its official Christmas 2025 payment schedule, the department typically follows the same pattern each year.

When Will Benefits Be Paid Over Christmas?

In 2025, Christmas Day falls on Thursday 25 December, with Boxing Day on Friday 26 December. Because benefit payments are not processed on bank holidays, anyone due to receive money on either of these dates is expected to be paid early.

Based on previous years, payments scheduled for 25 or 26 December are likely to arrive on Wednesday 24 December instead.

The same adjustment is expected for New Year’s Day, which also falls on a Thursday. Payments due on 1 January 2026 are likely to be paid on Wednesday 31 December 2025.

These early payments are made to ensure claimants are not left without support during the holiday period.

Universal Credit and Other Benefits

Universal Credit is usually paid monthly on the same date each month. If your payment date falls on a bank holiday, it is typically moved to the previous working day.

Other benefits follow different schedules. Some are paid weekly, others fortnightly or every four weeks. Child Benefit is usually paid every four weeks, while Pension Credit and Personal Independence Payment are typically paid every four weeks.

If you receive your payment early, it is important to budget carefully, as your next payment will still arrive on the original date, creating a longer gap.

Who Qualifies for the DWP Christmas Bonus?

The DWP Christmas bonus is a one-off £10 tax-free payment, usually paid during the first full week of December. It was introduced in 1972 to help with seasonal costs.

People receiving Universal Credit do not qualify for the bonus. However, it is paid automatically to those receiving certain benefits, including State Pension, Personal Independence Payment, Carer’s Allowance, Attendance Allowance, Pension Credit and several disability-related benefits.

No application is required.

What to Do If Your Payment Does Not Arrive

Most benefits are paid through the BACS system and often appear in bank accounts between midnight and early morning. Payment times can vary depending on your bank.

If your money does not arrive, check your award notice and bank account first. If the date is correct and the payment is missing, contact your bank before reaching out to the relevant DWP or HMRC helpline. Be aware that helplines may be closed on bank holidays.

Final Reminder for Claimants

Christmas payment changes happen every year, but they can still catch people out. Knowing your revised payment date and planning ahead can help avoid unnecessary stress during the festive season.
